The Vancouver Canucks just beat the Edmonton Oilers in a gutsy hard-hitting game that was seen across the nation on Hockey Night In Canada. I admit, I had lost faith after the shootout loss against Minnesota a couple of days ago. Luongo didn’t look good at all in that contest. But tonight’s game proved that there’s some grit in Vigneault’s squad.
All sorts of fisticuffs were exchanged in a high-tempo affair that turned out to be a statement game. With the win, Vancouver moves into 8th place and back into the playoff picture, while Edmonton still wallows in the western conference basement.
I’m somewhat concerned with the fact that Pyatt left the game with a probable shoulder injury. His powerful eyes are useful in hypnotizing the opposition. Luongo took a fair bit of punishment as well. His blocker hand nearly got torn off and he took a puck to the neck. Luckily, he’s okay and we can breathe again.
Tonight’s brutal display inspires me to make a prediction. Canucks will make the playoffs. They will even win the first round. But they won’t make it past the second round. The team’s not quite there. Maybe if they make some noise at the trade deadline, but that’s unlikely. Hopefully, they’ll be able to free up some cap room once the contracts for Nazzy and Morrison are up. In the meantime, let’s enjoy the ride while it lasts.
